Devils Tower is 86 miles from Suzies Camp at I-90 Exit 34, a little under two hours each way: I-90 west to Sundance, Wyoming, then US-14 and WY-24 north.
How do I get there?
Take I-90 west to Exit 185 at Sundance, follow US-14 to Devils Tower Junction, then WY-24 north for 6 miles to the entrance. We figure about 1 hr 55 min from camp to the visitor center with normal traffic.
What does it cost?
$25 per private vehicle or $20 per motorcycle, cards only (no cash). An America the Beautiful pass covers it.
What is there to do?
- The prairie dog town. About 40 acres of it, right beside the park road on the way in. Stop and watch.
- The Tower Trail. A paved 1.3-mile loop around the base of the tower, starting at the visitor center. Easy walking, big views up the columns.
- The visitor center, about 3 miles past the entrance, for exhibits and the start of the Tower Trail.
Pets are not allowed on any trail in the park, so leave the dog at camp for this one.
Where can we eat?
In Sundance on the way, or in Hulett, 9 miles north of the tower (a short detour). Or pack a lunch.
Can we make it a loop?
Yes, if there’s daylight left. On the way home, leave I-90 at Spearfish and drive US-14A through Spearfish Canyon, about 19 miles of cliffs and waterfalls, then come back through Lead and Deadwood. More on Spearfish Canyon in our 4-day itinerary.
