What is a dry cabin? What to bring for a cabin stay near Sturgis

Cabin interior with a made bed, reading lamp, wood-plank walls and framed art.

A dry cabin has beds, power and a porch but no plumbing inside: restrooms and hot showers are in a shared bathhouse a short walk away. All 18 cabins at Suzies Camp, at I-90 Exit 34 near Sturgis, South Dakota, are dry cabins, so you bring your own bedding and towels.

Think of a dry cabin as a step up from a tent: a real roof, a real bed and a door that locks, without the cost or the setup of a hotel room or an RV. Here’s what you’ll find, what you won’t, and what to pack.

What’s in a cabin at Suzies Camp?

  • Beds. They differ by cabin: two queens, three full beds, or a full bed plus a bunk bed (full below, single on top) are common. See every cabin’s beds.
  • Power. Lights and outlets for phones, a fan or a coffee maker.
  • A covered porch to sit out on in the evening.
  • Electric heat and air conditioning in every cabin, so the cabins are comfortable all year.
  • A picnic table, on request.

What isn’t in a dry cabin?

  • No sink, toilet or shower inside. That’s what “dry” means.
  • No sheets, blankets, pillows or towels. Bring your own.

Where are the showers and restrooms?

In Miss Suzies Bath House, a short walk from the cabins: hot on-demand showers, flush toilets (men’s and women’s) and a coin-op laundry. Bring shower shoes and a small bag or caddy for the walk over.

What should I pack for a dry cabin?

  • Bedding or sleeping bags, plus pillows
  • Towels and toiletries; shower shoes
  • A flashlight or headlamp for the walk to the bathhouse after dark
  • Camp chairs and a cooler
  • A propane grill or stove if you plan to cook. Open fires aren’t allowed; propane is fine.
  • Layers: Black Hills nights are cool even in summer

Who is a dry cabin a good fit for?

Couples, riders and small groups who want a bed and a roof without setting up camp. Because the bathrooms are shared, our cabins suit two to a few people best; big families who want their own bathroom and kitchen are usually happier in an RV or a motel.
